ISOTOPE LABORATORY

The Isotope Laboratory is equipped with 3 masspectrometers (ThermoFisher 252, Delta plus, Delta Five Plus) for the determination of hydrogen, carbon , nitrogen and oxygen isotope ratios.

Various pheripheries as a on-line carbonate preparation line (Kiel III), elemental analyser, (CE 1110), high-temperature reduction fcurnace (TC-EA) und gasbench II enable isotope analyses on carbonates, organic compounds, phosphates, sulfates and silicates.

 

ThermoFinnigan 252 + Kiel III

Carbon and oxygen isotope analyses are performed using a Kiel III carbonate preparation line connected online to a ThermoFisher 252 mass spectrometer

The ThermoFisher 252 mass spectrometer is equipped with 6 Faraday cups for the analysis of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur isotopes. The mass spectrometer has dual inlet system and allows analyses of carbonate with a reproducibility <±0.06 permil (1 Std.dev.).

 

 

 

 

Kiel III carbonate preparation line

The Kiel III carbonate preparartion line enables analyses of small carbonate samples (> 0.02 mg CaCO3) with high precision. The carbonate samples are reacted under vacuum with 100% H3PO4, CO2 is collected in trap at  -196°C and transferred online the mass spectrometer. Typically,  46 samples can be analysed per day (24 hours).

ThermoFinnigan Delta Plus + elemental analyser (CE 1110) + TC-EA

Carbon and oxygen isotope analyses on organic materials (sedimentary organic carbon, cellulose, collagene etc.) are analysed using a CE 1100 elemental analyser coupled online via a Conflo III Interface to a ThermoFisher Delta Plus mass spectrometer.

Organic compounds are oxidized at 1020° C by addition of O2 to CO2 and NOx. The gases are transferred in the He stream on a Cu reduction furnace (650° C) in order to reduce  NOx to N2.  After passing a chromatographic column, CO2 and N2 are transferrred to the mass spectrometer.

 

 

 

ThermoFinnigan TC-EA

Oxygen isotope analyses on phosphates, sulfates and organic tissues (e.g. cellulose) are performed using a high-temperature conversion - elemental analyser (TC-EA) coupled via a Conflo III Interface to a ThermoFinnigan Delta plus mass spectrometer.

The high temperature conversion - elemental analyser is equipped with a glassy carbon reactor. Oxygen of Inorganic and organic materials are transferred at 1450° C to CO + X. Oxygen isotope ratios are determined on CO transfeered from the TC-EA in He stream to the mass spectrometer.

Die Gasbench II erlaubt Kohlenstoff- und Sauerstoffisotopenanalysen an Karbonat, Sauerstoffisotopenanalysen an Wässern sowie Kohlenstoffisotopenanalysen am gesamt gelöstenm Kohlenstoff (DIC. Es können bis zu 80 Proben in einer Sequenz analysiert werden.

Das ThermoFinnigan Delta V Plus Massenspektrometer ist mit Auffängern zur Messung der Messung der Kohlenstoff-, Stickstoff, Sauerstoff- und Schwefelisotopenverhältnisse bestückt. Das Massenspektrometer verfügt über ein Doppeleinlasssystem und ermöglicht Messungen mit einer hohen analytischen Reproduzierbarkeit
